《你有做leader的潜能吗?有效管理团队的八条准则》

Partial MSc in Accounting Programme’s vision is to cultivate future leaders for the commercial world such as consultancy firms, financial institutions, accountancy firms and etc.  Like the figure of Hamlet, a thousand people could have a thousand opinions towards leadership.

Research done by QSTopMBA.com lists out several major characters of leadership. Top three are effective communication skill, excellent interpersonal skill and inspiration to others.

In order to let ACCTers process effective leadership skills, most of the courses opened in the Spring Term of the MSc in Accounting require ACCTers to complete project as team.

1.    What is the basic discipline that makes teams work?

As Prof. Michael Ferguson mentioned in the Self-peer Evaluation Seminar, team members often hold different expectation of a team project. Some may think ‘pass’ is good enough, while some may aim for ‘distinction’. If a team couldn’t define the quality and agree upon a universal goal of the assigned work, then there maybe consequence comes after.

“Ideal teamwork represents a set of values that encourage listing and responding constructively to views expressed by others, giving others the benefit of the doubt, providing support, and recognizing the interests and achievements of others.”

                                                                                                                     — Katzenbach & Smith, 2005

2.  Tips: how to form an effective team?

1) Select members for skill and skill potential, not personality.
Everyone has his or her own strengths. Combining members with complementary skills results efficient collaboration.

2) Establish urgency, demanding performance standards, and direction.
The objectives of the project should be set personally. At the beginning of the project, making sure a clear mission and guideline are communicated between all team members.

3) Pay particular attention to first meetings and actions.
Normally, the first gathering of a team is important. Members select a leader. Leader divides project and as-sign segmented tasks to team members fairly based on their expertise.

4) Set some clear rules of behavior.
It is encouraged that team should establish certain rules such as attendance, frequency of discussions, qua-lity of preparation for meetings and so on. Members are responsible to follow the rules when doing the project. For example, some members might get internships during the project. This should be informed to other group members beforehand in case of missing regular meetings

5) Set and seize upon a few immediate performance-oriented tasks and goals.
Team shall meet up on each secluded deadline, update and report what has been processed.

6) Challenge the group regularly with fresh facts and information.
Team performance may largely benefit from open debate.  Fresh and different thoughts enrich team’s understanding of the project, thereby helping improve its common approach cognitively.

7) Spend lots of time together.
We all have expertise and limitations. That is why frequent and regular gathering can make team member mutually accountable, which may ultimately create a synergy effect.

8) Exploit the power of positive feedback, recognition, and reward.
During the project, making sure objective feedback is available to each of the team member in a timely manner. Members could accept and react on the feedback with positive attitude.

3. Things to avoid

Gossiping. As Prof. Michael Ferguson said “Gossip destroys team faster than anything. “ We expect ACCTers to resolve conflict in a mature way.
